12.3 Training Code of Conduct

12.3.1 General rules of conduct

General rules of conduct for instructors, examiners and other training personnel are specified below. Whenever clarification is required, the matter should be referred to the concerned fleet training manager or other supervising manager.

  • Instructors shall comply with the terms and conditions of their employment.
  • All training personnel shall ensure proper use of all company equipment, facilities and devices.
  • Instructors shall perform their duties in accordance with the policies, procedures and guidelines provided in approved training manuals and supporting company documentation.
  • Instructors shall further perform their duties in accordance with any reasonable request by an authorized manager.
  • All safety rules shall be adhered to at all times.
  • Safety equipment shall be used in accordance with the applicable instructions whenever necessary.
  • Threatening or violent behaviour or language towards a manager, another instructor, or a trainee is prohibited.
  • Behaviour, actions or inactions that would in any way jeopardize the safety or well-being of other instructors, pilots, employees or passengers is prohibited.
  • Smoking in non-smoking areas is not permitted.
  • Instructors must not use behaviour, language, or non-verbal language that is discriminatory or intimidating.
  • Harassment of individuals, whether sexual or otherwise, is not permitted.
  • Bullying of individuals, in any form, is prohibited.
  • Removal of company property from the premises without permission is prohibited.
  • Instructors must not behave in a manner that brings, or may bring, the organization into disrepute.
  • Tactical Sickness shall not be tolerated.

12.3.2 Instructor discipline and standard of performance

A review panel consisting of the postholder / head of training and / or the head of flight training, and the concerned fleet training manager, will interview the instructor or examiner, and upon consideration of the nature and seriousness of the issues, will decide upon appropriate remedial and / or disciplinary action. Advice from the concerned chief pilot or flight operations leadership may also be sought and considered in such cases. Detailed procedures and requirements applicable to the review panel live in the approved operations manuals (typically the training or crew-standards part of the OM suite).

12.3.3 Team work and work allocation

All training personnel are expected to participate in ground, simulator and flight training duties, as required by training management, and as appropriate to their qualification and regulatory authorization(s). They are expected to demonstrate flexibility towards the number of days (and / or amount of time) spent for training-related matters such as development, workshops, meetings and actual conduct of ground, simulator and / or flight training.

All personnel are expected to demonstrate a high level of teamwork projected in sharing information, providing support when necessary, and ensuring effective communication.

12.3.4 Communications

Formal and regular lines of communication (in accordance with the organizational structure specified in the approved operations manuals) shall be established and maintained by all training management and personnel, in order to effectively communicate all relevant information, policies, instructions and procedures, and thereby ensure the highest quality of training.

Communication with the appropriate Flight Operations Department personnel is encouraged and expected whenever it is relevant to training policies or procedures.

Any external communication (involving other departments or organizations) shall be achieved firstly through the applicable fleet training manager, who will in turn refer the matter(s) for follow-up to the head of flight training and / or the nominated postholder for operations training.

Any abnormalities, concerns or events that occur during training shall be communicated firstly to the applicable fleet training manager, who shall follow up, when necessary, with the head of flight training and / or the postholder / head of training. Such occurrences shall not be discussed with any other party internally or externally.

12.3.5 Development work

Instructors and examiners may be requested to participate in training development work, such as the design and update of training materials, courseware, lesson plans and other supporting documentation.

12.3.6 Conduct of training

During the conduct of training and / or checking sessions, the instructors, examiners and facilitators are expected to demonstrate a high level of cross-cultural awareness and sensitivity, in order to avoid or minimize any potential conflict, misunderstanding or misinterpretation. In particular, they must not engage in any discussions involving potentially-sensitive topics (political, racial, cultural or sexually related issues) during the conduct of a session.
