12.9 Training Manuals

12.9.1 Fleet Training Manual

The approved course footprints do not include the detailed supporting material or information required for the conduct of training. Detailed lesson plans for use by instructors and trainees, and any associated performance and loading data, weather and navigational information (including flight plans and NOTAMs, if necessary) are provided in the respective Fleet Training Manuals. Typical type examples include:

  • Airbus single-aisle fleet (e.g. A318 / 319 / 320 / 321): A320 family Fleet Training Manual.
  • Airbus long-range fleet (e.g. A330 / A340): A330 / A340 Fleet Training Manual.
  • Boeing long-range fleet (e.g. B777): B777 Fleet Training Manual.

Your organisation publishes manuals for the types it operates; the structure and authority rules below apply regardless of which types those are.

Lesson plans and supporting materials are not always subject to specific national-authority approval item by item. However, recurrent training and checking lesson plans shall be forwarded to the national authority for their information and review prior to implementation where the approved programme or State of approval requires it. In addition, lesson plans may be periodically audited by either the Authority or the organisation's Quality Assurance department to confirm their continuing suitability and effectiveness, and for correct implementation of the approved training syllabus.

The Fleet Training Manuals are further supported by their respective Flight Crew Training Manual, which are available in the crew library and the organisation's training document library.

Current lesson plans and supporting documentation extracted from the Fleet Training Manuals are available in the operations training document library, for reference and use by all flight crew members, instructors and examiners.

12.9.2 FCOM

The Flight Crew Operating Manual (FCOM) and the associated Quick Reference Handbook (QRH) are developed specifically for flight crews, in order to provide them with all of the necessary information about the operational, technical, procedural, and performance characteristics that are required for the safe and efficient aircraft operation. These manuals take into account all of the operational procedures to be applied during normal and abnormal / emergency situations that may occur on ground or in flight.

In addition, the FCOM is to be used as a comprehensive reference guide during initial and recurrent flight crew training.

12.9.3 FCTM

The Flight Crew Training Manual (FCTM) is published as a supplement to the FCOM, and is designed to provide pilots with practical information, techniques and other guidance on the operation of the applicable aeroplane type. It should be read in conjunction with the FCOM. If there is any conflicting information, the FCOM is the overriding reference. Operator training or operational policy may also vary from some information in the generic manufacturer's FCTM. In such cases, the operator policy is the overriding authority.

Type FCTMs (for example A320, A330, A340 and B777) are published as provided by the manufacturer. They may be issued without the addition of the company corporate logo. Nevertheless, the operator shall be liable for their content as published. When considered appropriate, an operator Differences Notice shall be included at the front of an FCTM, calling attention to differences between the content of the FCTM and specific operator procedures and requirements.

12.9.4 Miscellaneous training documents

Certain training reference documentation may be used to supply further information about specific aircraft, systems or conduct of operations. However, such documents are not authoritative and, in all cases, the policies and procedures specified in the applicable Operations Manuals or the FCTM take precedence.
